The incense burning "smoking men" or “smokers” are among the most beloved holiday traditions in the Ore mountains. The body of the figure lifts off, revealing a spot for placing an incense cone. Once the cone is lit, the body is replaced. The smoke from the cone wafts out through the open mouth, giving the appearance of pipe smoking. Traditionally, the figures are those of the beloved little people in village life--the night watchman, the peddler--who are given a moment of leisure to relax and smoke their pipes.
